I love that I chose to attend college for photography, it really helped me attain knowledge and skills I was able to employ when I got hired by a photographer 6 days after graduating!

While I'm not sure where you are located in the US, I fully recommend the Antonelli Institute of Art & Photography in Erdenheim, PA. (It's basically Philadelphia, but in an extremely beautiful, nice area called Chestnut Hill). They offer an Associates Degree with their two year program, and they only offer Photography and Graphic Arts courses of study, so it's also an extremely small school with maybe 200 students at most combined. Great teachers, and you really get to know and befriend everyone around the school. When I was looking around I liked Antonelli the best as I knew I wanted to Major in Photography and didn't want to have to worry about taking extraneous classes I didn't need. In their course study, all you take is photography classes, about 5 each semester, plus one class ea. semester aimed at educating you on understanding the business side. The first year is strictly B&W film...35mm and 4x5. The second year is color with digital. Some of the classes include Portrait, Commercial, Fashion, Photojournalism...such a great balance, imo.

The cost isn't so bad, not in comparison to some other art schools around, plus it's only 2 years so no need to worry about paying for "foundation" year nor books for English, Math, yadda yadda. The main expenses you will encounter are for supplies, film, printing paper, digital camera your second year, etc.

Visit: http://www.antonelli.edu if you would like further information! :) Best of luck to you and I hope you find the best school that suits you!
References :
There are different kinds of photo schools, some are emphasis on art, others offer business emphasis as well so you can get a job. I went to one of each.
The first school cost me nothing because of grants and financial aid and I learned some great techniques in traditional art photography with the encouragement of some great professors that I still am in touch with. I learned a lot about the history of photography and art. Unfortunately it didn't prepare me for the business of photography in the 21st century. But I don't regret it one bit.
The second school was a 10 month program that prepared me for making a living doing what I love and helped students find jobs or start their own business. I had a job within 2 months of graduating.
I do have student loans but I have the means to pay them. If I had prepared more before I jumped into the 2nd school, I probably could of found scholarships for some of my expenses but life goes on. A lot of people have student loans, it's the way it goes sometimes, but start early finding funding if thats an issue, an accredited school will help you with this process.
It's not the diploma that will get you a job, it's what you learn and how hard you work that makes the difference. Plus you will have the resource of your chosen schools faculty to encourage you and possible lifelong friends.
try allartschools.com for a whole variety of schools and plan the goals you want for your life. Good Luck!
References :
If you are going to become a photographer....don't go to school for it. It is a waste of your time.
If you are going to teach it, well, naturally you want to get your masters in it.
But to become a photographer, train under the pros in the field. I mean the photographers that other photographers respect. You can apprentice and they'll love the help.
Really. I learned more working with the pros than all the time I spent in college. Also don't get hooked into the college finding you a job after you graduate as that only happens every once and a while.

Life is short. Learn what you can as fast as you can with the most quality you can find.
Photography is a great profession, and college won't teach you anything that you can't learn under the wing of a pro. Oh, and having a photography diploma doesn't really help you at all.

This may sound like I am jaded against college - I am not, (college is great for most professions, however not this one), I just hate to see young people make the same mistakes that I wished I could've avoided early in life.

But listen, if you are not going to definitely be a photographer, by all means, GO to college, just take your major courses until you find out what you want. And if you want to start your own studio, major in business.

Good luck.
References :
Student Loans....the gift that keeps on taking, and taking, and taking.....

Ithaca College. I got a BFA in Film, Photography and Visual Arts. I can't recommend other schools only because I don't have experience with them. I loved Ithaca. It's a small school so you can get the attention from professors you need for something like photo. They'll know your work from Freshman year on so they'll be able to see your growth and nurture it.

Plus, the town itself presents challenges to photo that other places won't. Like shooting in the snow - it's a skill.
